Jake Navarra HTSOB grows into their true selves on this EP. The melodic goal that inspired the inception of this band is achieved in the negative space while retaining the aggressive edge that the Oakland based group cannot remove from their DNA. Favorite track: John the Baptist.

Velocipede 03:08
I feel this lead under my feet When the day is over a dirty man needs heat I know I’ve got just what you need ‘Cause I’m the one, baby Who’s moving all this speed Pull the throttle on my motor Don’t let up until my meter’s pegged Lay your claws into my shoulder Let me hold on to your legs I put my ticket in your turnstile An all night pass to make the rounds I won’t be waiting at the underground You know this train is going All the way downtown Pull the throttle on my motor Don’t let up until my meter’s pegged Lay your claws into my shoulder Let me hold on to your legs Tandem ride So I find Now’s the time Genitalia collides, yeah They say that you are hard to mount My revolution will turn these cranks around Can’t you feel my forward motion I’ve got the notion To turn this saddle brown Lay your body on my motor Don’t let up until my meter’s pegged Put your claws into my shoulder Let me hold on to your legs Yeah, yeah Oh

Come, you masters of war You that build the big guns You that build the death planes You that build all the bombs You that hide behind walls You that hide behind desks I just want you to know I can see through your masks You that never done nothing But build to destroy You play with my world Like it’s your little toy You put a gun in my hand And you hide from my eyes And you turn and run farther When the fast bullets fly Like Judas of old You lie and deceive A world war can be won You want me to believe But I see through your eyes And I see through your brain Like I see through the water That runs down my drain You fasten all the triggers For the others to fire Then you set back and watch While the death count gets higher You hide in your mansion While the young people’s blood Flows out of their bodies And is buried in the mud You’ve thrown the worst fear That can ever be hurled Fear to bring children Into the world For threatening my baby Unborn and unnamed You ain't worth the blood That runs in your veins How much do I know To talk out of turn You might say that I’m young You might say I’m unlearned But there’s one thing I know Though I’m younger than you That even Jesus would never Forgive what you do Let me ask you one question Is your money that good Will it buy you forgiveness Do you think that it could I think you will find When your death takes its toll All the money you made Will never buy back your soul And I hope that you die And your death will come soon I will follow your casket By the pale afternoon And I’ll watch while you’re lowered Down to your deathbed And I’ll stand over your grave 'Til I’m sure that you’re dead

Black Ships 06:52
Twist the knife Crying reptile tears Beneath revilement lies And when you know it’s gone, you’re dry Through hidden routes Black ships are tossed But your waves break down along the rocks They say that ice pumps out your blood Every pale charade is just a bluff I chart the stars alone To cross the ocean home Slave to the current’s will When all the winds are still Tides crash down around your garden wall Minor chords intone a drowning pall Although I thirst for water, there’s none around I hear the seraph’s choir calling me down Calling me down Calling me to drown Across dark seas Shadows are cast From skeletal masts Black ships of deceit Adrift on arctic oceans Lost on endless seas Day brings hellish sunlight Night brings frost disease

Started pristine, since tattered None of this really matters Plastered on pedestals high Comes crashing down from the sky Decayed before it’s born Penitent’s patience breeds scorn But she found another way There’s really no following me to the grave Bloodied and battered Breastbone shattered Goodness gave way to my grief And all of my wants became needs And as she took aim for the cutting Well I was reduced down to nothing I should have begged for my mercy I should have cried for restraint But she found another way There’s really no following me to the grave Cut from cadavers Heads on platters And my head Suddenly floating and free And my neck Suddenly open to breathe And my eyes Clouded by nothin' to see And my body Falls to the floor in a heap Bound by my winters and dead to my rights Fueled by the embers of these endless nights Levitate limbless, cerebral, serene I had to taste it to know what it means

about

"Velocipede" is the second EP by San Francisco/Oakland heavy psychedelic hard rock pioneers High Tone Son of a Bitch. This EP explores more of the obscure 70s rock and proto-doom metal influences the band had, along with the more eclectic influences that were creeping into the band's sound. This album was recorded in late 2004, and was slated to be released in early 2005. Andrew's drug addiction, which eventually claimed his life, was beginning to interfere with the band toward the end of the recording process, and the band unfortunately broke up before a scheduled European tour, resulting in both the English label, Organ, shelving the CD release of the EP and the Spanish label, Throne, axing the planned release of both "Velocipede" and "Better You Than Me" as two sides of a single Vinyl LP record. On "Velocipede", HTSOB are more mature musically, with a darker sound, and more of the band's trademark "post-doom hard rock" psychedelic side emerging. The leads are far more complex, interesting, and soulfully developed here, with Andrew's pain audible in every lick shared by his brother in each agonizing dual bend. "Better You Than Me"'s vocalist, Scott Wagner was replaced by Russ Kent in 2004, and Russ delivered a new level of polish to the band's sound. While Russ was best known a guitarist for lauded underground sludge/doom band Noothgrush and for death punk band Alaric, he first found success as a vocalist for the early Bay Area speed metal band Messiah. Russ brings a more classic hard rock/metal sensibility to the sound on this recording, and he also played Moog synthesizer live and at pracitce, so the band was able to expand on the use of synth elements that Dave Edwardson had contributed to the first EP. Andee Conners was replaced on drums with a revolving, Spinal Tap style pantheon of drummers, until the band finally found a match in Johann Zamora, who had played drums for other Bay Area stoner and sludge/doom type outfits like Totimoshi and Men of Porn before joining HTSOB. With Andrew's death in 2007, there seemed to be no possibility of a reunion, and "Velocipede" was shelved until the band re-formed in 2019.
